2-slot Air-Cooled GeForce RTX 4090 with Lateral Blower Shows Up in China

A Chinese graphics card manufacturer unveiled what is likely the only 2-slot, air-cooled GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card in existence. Most gaming-segment RTX 4090 graphics cards tend to be 3-4 slots thick, and the only 2-slot ones are liquid-cooled ones. This is due to the 450 W stock typical graphics power rating of the RTX 4090, which can go as high as 600 W for certain custom-design cards. This product is aimed at the niche that wants a bunch of RTX 4090 cards in a space-constrained workstation chassis.

The card appears to be around 30-32 cm in length, and its height is strictly what constitutes "full-height" (11.5 cm). The cooler is in fact 1-2 mm thinner than what constitutes 2-slot; and probably uses a vapor-chamber plate welded to a stack of aluminium or copper channels that dissipate heat to airflow from a lateral-blower. The heatsink may look underpowered for a GPU like the RTX 4090, but probably over-relies on the blower operating at a very high RPM at all times—same principal as server cooling, where an array of 40 mm fans at nearly max-RPM push air through thin channel-type heatsinks cooling large 250 W TDP server processors. The card lacks a backplate to make it easier for the adjacent card to breathe in air. Power is drawn from a 16-pin ATX 12VHPWR connector located at the tail-end of the card, rather than on its top. The card reportedly has its power limits locked to 450 W (probably through power-connector signal keying). The card was briefly available on Alibaba-owned peer-to-peer trading platform Goofish, where it was priced at RMB ¥15,000 (about USD $2,150).

This MEG Trident X2 is not only equipped with the top-of-the-line i9-13900K processor and RTX 4090 graphics card but also comes with MSI's exclusive Silent Storm Cooling 3 heat dissipation technology, which can effectively reduce the heat generated by components. The Air Baffle design can effectively collect the surrounding cold air and prevent the excess heat inside the chassis from flowing back to the graphics card. It is supplemented by the motherboard's upside-down design so that the graphics card is placed on the top to be cooled by the cold air first.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU Pulls up to 200W, GA103-based, Lineup Power Detailed

At its 2023 International CES event, NVIDIA is expected to launch not just its desktop GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards, but more importantly, also its GeForce RTX 40-series Laptop GPU series powering next-generation gaming notebooks based on the upcoming 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processors. NVIDIA seems to be making a very tight rope-walk between power-management and generational performance increase in this power- and thermal-constrained form-factor. Wccftech scored a major scoop on the specs of various RTX 40-series Laptop GPUs.

The GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" Laptop GPU lineup will be led by the RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, based on the 4 nm "AD103" silicon (same one that powers the desktop RTX 4080). It will be equipped with 16 GB of memory, a yet-unknown core-configuration, GPU Boost frequencies of up to 2.04 GHz, and typical power draw ranging between 150 W to 175 W, which can peak up to 200 W thanks to the 25 W dynamic boost range (power permissible by the platform if the other components such as CPU aren't drawing their peak power).

Alphacool Announces new Core Water Block for GeForce RTX 4090 Reference and Founders Designs

The Core product line takes shape with the new coolers in the usual high quality, excellent performance and functional design language. The heart of the copper cooler is an assembly of connector terminal and cooler, which is milled from one piece of copper. The fine workmanship combined with the hard and resistant chrome plating of the entire copper cooler meet the highest quality standards. The brass G1/4" threads integrated on both sides, also chrome-plated, stand out visually striking from the terminal and are one of the key points of the new design language that will be present in all products of the Core series.

The aluminium backplate matched to the design together with the terminal forms a single unit. It convinces with clear and homogeneous optics on the back of the cooler. The individually controllable lighting consists of digitally addressable RGB LEDs and enables the even and colorful illumination of the entire cooler.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti to Feature Shorter PCB, 220 Watt TDP, and 16-Pin 12VHPWR Power Connector

While NVIDIA has launched high-end GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 GPUs from its Ada Lovelace family, middle and lower-end products are brewing to satisfy the entire consumer market. Today, according to the kopite7kimi, a well-known leaker, we have potential information about the configuration of the upcoming GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics card. Featuring 4352 FP32 CUDA cores, the GPU is powered by an AD106-350-A1 die. On the die, there is 32 MB of L2 cache. To pair, it has 8 GB of GDDR6 18 Gbps memory, which should be enough to power games at 1440p resolution, which this card is aiming for.

The design of the cards reference PG190 PCB is supposedly very short, making it ideal for ITX-sized designs we could see from NVIDIA's AIB partners. Interestingly, with a TDP of 220 Watts, the reference card is powered by the infamous 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, capable of supplying 600 Watts of power. This choice of connector is unclear; however, it could be NVIDIA's push to standardize its usage across all products in the Ada Lovelace family stack. While the card should not need the full potential of the connector, it signals that the company could only be using this type of connector for all of its future designs.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 16 GB Laptop SKU Spotted in Next-Gen HP Omen 17 Laptop

According to the well-known hardware leaker @momomo_us, HP is preparing the launch of its next-generation Omen 17 gaming laptops. And with a new generation of chips coming to consumers, HP accidentally made some information about laptop SKUs public. Four models are listed, and they represent a combination of Intel's 13th-generation Raptor Lake mobile processors with NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace RTX 40 series graphics cards for the mobile/laptop sector. The four SKUs are: CM2007NQ/CM2005NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4060 8 GB; CM2001NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4070 8 GB; CK2007NQ/CK2004NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4080 12 GB; CK2001NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4090 16 GB.

The most exciting find here is the appearance of the xx90 series in the mobile/laptop form factor, which has not been the case before. The GeForce RTX 4090 laptop edition is supposedly equipped with 16 GB of VRAM, and the GPU SKU should be a cut-down version of AD102 GPU adjusted for power and clock constraints so it can run within a reasonable TDP. With NVIDIA seemingly giving its clients an RTX 4090 SKU option, we have to wait and see what the CUDA core counts are and how clocks scale in a more restricted laptop environment.

Also, the design around the cooling fins and jetplate makes for a cleaner look.

RTX 4090 has Issues with Need for Speed Unbound that can Only be Fixed with a VBIOS Update

Need for Speed Unbound (NFS Unbound), the latest entry to the popular genre-defining race sim by EA that launched today, unearthed a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics card that cannot be fixed by simply updating the drivers or the game. This is a world-first—never before has a game required a VBIOS update to work around problems.

According to EA, the title exhibits a display flashing/blinking issue on machines powered by the RTX 4090, which requires a firmware update (i.e. video BIOS update). Luckily, this doesn't involve putting your RTX 4090 through a nerve-racking NVFlash manual BIOS update process (not that there's any risk with most RTX 4090 cards shipping with dual-BIOS). NVIDIA has released a fully-automated Firmware Update Tool that can be run from within Windows, which easily updates the video BIOS of the RTX 4090. We confirmed that it is in fact the video BIOS that is being updated (by comparing the VBIOS dumps before and after using the tool).
Update Dec 3rd: EA Support has just updated their support recommendation from graphics card VBIOS update to a motherboard BIOS update. "After testing, we've found a solution is to upgrade the motherboard BIOS. Please refer to your motherboard manufacturer's support page to obtain the latest system BIOS," the updated recommendation reads.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with Nearly Half its Power-limit and Undervolting Loses Just 8% Performance

The monstrous NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics card has the potential to be a very efficient high-end graphics card with a daily-use undervolt, and with its power-limit halved, finds an undervolting adventure review by Korean tech publication Quasar Zone. The reviewer tested the RTX 4090 with a number of GPU core voltage settings, and lowered software-level power-limits (down from its 450 W default).

It's important to note that 450 W is a very arbitrary number for the RTX 4090's power limit, the GPU rarely draws that much power in typical gaming workloads. Our own testing at stock settings sees its gaming power draw around the 340 W-mark. Quasar Zone tested the RTX 4090 with a power limit as low as 60% (270 W). With its most aggressive power management they could muster (i.e. 270 W PL), the card was found to lose just around 8% of performance at 4K UHD, averaged across five AAA games at maxed out settings. The story is similar with undervolting the GPU down to 850 mV, down from its 1 V stock. In both cases, the performance loss appear well contained, while providing a reduction in power-draw (in turn heat and noise).

The EVGA GeForce RTX 4090 We Wish You Had

EVGA abruptly ended its NVIDIA GeForce graphics card business in September. The company continues to make motherboards, PSUs, coolers, and gaming peripherals. Its graphics card business is believed to have been shuttered as the company was done developing custom-design GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards that never made it to mass-production. JayzTwoCents got their hands on one such graphics card, and by the looks of it, this is possibly the best custom-design RTX 4090.

Since it's no longer an AIC partner, EVGA isn't allowed to display "GeForce RTX" branding on the product, and so their EVGA "Next Gen Graphics" card is branded as such. The card is surprisingly compact compared to the other 33-36 cm RTX 4090 custom-design cards. EVGA made all efforts to maximize its spatial utilization with a high-density aluminium fin-stack heatsink.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Performance Claims Extrapolated, Performs Within Striking Distance of RTX 4090

AMD on Thursday launched the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT RDNA3 graphics cards. With these, the company claims to have repeated its feat of a 50+ percent performance/Watt gain over the previous-generation, which propelled the RX 6000-series to competitiveness with NVIDIA's fastest RTX 30-series SKUs. AMD's performance claims for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX put the card at anywhere between 50% to 70% faster than the company's current flagship, the RX 6950 XT, when tested at 4K UHD resolution. Digging through these claims, and piecing together relevant information from the Endnotes, HXL was able to draw an extrapolated performance comparison between the RX 7900 XTX, the real-world tested RTX 4090, and previous-generation flagships RTX 3090 Ti and RX 6950 XT.

The graphs put the Radeon RX 7900 XTX menacingly close to the GeForce RTX 4090. In Watch_Dogs Legion, the RTX 4090 is 6.4% faster than the RX 7900 XTX. Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus see the two cards evenly matched, with a delta under 1%. The RTX 4090 is 4.4% faster with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022). Accounting for the pinch of salt usually associated with launch-date first-party performance claims; the RX 7900 XTX would end up within 5-10% of the RTX 4090, but pricing changes everything. The RTX 4090 is a $1,599 (MSRP) card, whereas the RX 7900 XTX is $999. Assuming the upcoming RTX 4080 (16 GB) is around 10% slower than the RTX 4090; the main clash for this generation will be between the RTX 4080 and RX 7900 XTX. Even here, AMD gets ahead with pricing, as the RTX 4080 was announced with an MSRP of $1,199 (exactly 20% pricier than the RX 7900 XTX). With the FSR 3.0 Fluid Motion announcement, AMD also blunted NVIDIA's DLSS 3 Frame Generation performance advantage.

Comino Launches a GPU Waterblock for Gigabyte's GeForce RTX 4090 SKUs

The innovative manufacturer of high-end multi-GPU workstations and professional liquid cooling solutions for individuals and workgroups requiring GPU computation, announces a slim waterblock of top-tier efficiency for GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4090 GAMING OC 24 GB and AORUS RTX 4090 MASTER 24G GPUs.

Given the fact that the latest 4090 GPUs by Nvidia are extremely power hungry, the Comino team did its best to deliver the highest performance 4090 waterblock design, specifically adding:

GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF PCB Pictured with Two 16-pin Power Inputs

GALAX showed off its GeForce RTX 4090 HOF (hall of fame) graphics card targeting enthusiasts. The card is meant to be paired with extreme cooling solutions to climb up benchmarking leaderboards. A massive 27+4 phase VRM powers the card, which pulls power from two 12+4 pin ATX 12VHPWR connectors for a theoretical maximum power draw of 1275 W. The idea behind the two connectors is to support a power-limit that's above 600 W. We'll have to wait and see what it is, but we doubt it's "1200 W."

The additional power connector should also help soak up excursions during intense benchmarking sessions, which could otherwise destabilize the OC and cause the benchmark to crash. The production of the card, in its OCLab Edition SKU, typically ships with a Bitspower-sourced water block. If you're having déjà vu reading this post, it's because this is actually the second HOF graphics card by GALAX to feature two 12VHPWR inputs, the previous one was the RTX 3090 Ti HOF, which was released in April 2022.

3D Printed Tool Reinforces 16-pin 12VHPWR Connector While Helping with Cable Management

A Redditor who goes by mikejc shared the 3D printer model for a contraption that safely bends a 16-pin ATX 12VHPWR connector to a 90° angle for cable-management. It's essentially a crutch to guide the high-gauge cables of the connector, which bends the cable at a safe 3.5 cm distance away from the connector. A properly guided cable reduces mechanical stresses on the contacts of the 12VHPWR connector, improving its durability in scenarios where PC enthusiasts want to manage cable clutter in their PCs. The PC enthusiast community was stirred last week to end-user reports of GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards with burned 16-pin power connectors.
