In my opinion the proper concept of a "core" was gone from the moment CPUs started executing multiple instructions concurrently using separate ALUs, from that point on it is kind of a waste of time to think of them as "singular cores" because even if they're processing 1 stream of instructions...

BTW, AMD's lawsuit arguments were mostly centered around performance expectations, not that the CPU didn't have "real cores". It's obvious no one would have cared how many cores it had if the thing was 10X faster, the argument basically was "consumers expected more performance out of 8 cores...
